Hoof Capsule Medial Lateral Balance |
By Tom Petersen, AFA CJF
One of the most common issues a farrier sees in lame horses as well as in sound horses is medial lateral hoof capsule imbalances. These can be caused by wear, poor trimming, and poor conformation. Medial lateral imbalances can cause sheared heels, coronary band jamming, joint space crushing, heel pain, and serious strain on the collateral ligaments of the limb. You can assess medial lateral balance of the hoof capsule by observing it either on flat level ground or from sighting it from the back of the foot while it's in your hand. Balancing the hoof capsule is one of the most important basic fundamental skills of the farrier's craft. This fundamental skill is one that is achieved over a lengthy time working with a veteran farrier and studying how the hoof capsule reacts to outside forces. Then a farrier may have the knowledge to put the hoof capsule back to a medial lateral balanced state. If you have any questions concerning balance of the hoof capsule you can email them to me, Tom Petersen, at equinemt@yahoo.com.
*Tom Petersen is a Certified Journeyman Farrier who is at Montana Equine on a fairly regular basis, seeing a variety of cases. Please call the clinic (406)285-0123 to find out more information! |
